1.प्रकाश-चक्र (Circle of Illumination):
वैसी काल्पनिक रेखा जो पृथ्वी के प्रकाशित और अप्रकाशित भाग को बाँटती है।
पृथ्वी की गतियाँ: पृथ्वी की दो गतियाँ हैं-
1. घूर्णन (Rotation) या दैनिक गतिः पृथ्वी सदैव अपने अक्ष पर पश्चिम से पूर्व घूमती रहती है जिसे पृथ्वी का घूर्णन या परिभ्रमण कहते हैं। इसके कारण दिन व रात होते हैं। अतः इस गति को दैनिक गति भी कहते हैं।
नोटः पृथ्वी के अपनी धूरी पर घुमने के कारण भूमध्य रेखा पर वस्तुओं का रैखिक वेग अन्य स्थानों की तुलना में अधिक होता है।

इस कारण भूमध्य रेखा पर स्थित देश पृथ्वी के घूर्णन के उच्चतम रैखिक वेग का प्रतिनिधित्व करेगा।
भूमध्य रेखा तीन महाद्वीपों दक्षिण अमेरिका, अफ्रीका एवं एशिया के कुल 13 देशों से होकर गुजरती है।
2. परिक्रमण (Revolution) या वार्षिक गतिः
पृथ्वी अपने अक्ष पर घूमने के साथ-साथ सूर्य के चारों ओर एक दीर्घवृत्तीय मार्ग पर परिक्रमा करती है जिसे परिक्रमण या वार्षिक गति कहते हैं। पृथ्वी को सूर्य की एक परिक्रमा पूरा करने में 365 दिन 6 घंटे का समय लगता है।
3.नक्षत्र दिवस (Sideral day): एक मध्याह्न रेखा के ऊपर किसी निश्चित नक्षत्र के उत्तरोत्तर दो बार गुजरने के बीच की अवधि को नक्षत्र दिवस कहते हैं।
यह 23 घंटे व 56 मिनट की अवधि का होता है।
4.सौर दिवस (Solar day): जब सूर्य को गतिहीन मानकर पृथ्वी द्वारा उसके परिक्रमण की गणना दिवसों के रूप में की जाती है तब सौर दिवस ज्ञात होता है।
इसकी अवधि पूरे 24 घंटे होती है।
नोटः अपने परिक्रमा पथ में पृथ्वी सूर्य के चारों ओर 29.8 किमी./से. के वेग से चक्कर लगाती है।

5.उपसीर (Perihelion):
1. पृथ्वी सूर्य की परिक्रमा दीर्घवृत्तीय कक्षा में करती है जिसके एक कोकस पर सूर्य होता है।
2. जब पृथ्वी सूर्य के अत्यधिक पास होती है तो उसे उपसौर कहते हैं।
3. ऐसी स्थिति 3 जनवरी को होती है यानी 3 जनवरी को पृथ्वी सूर्य के सबसे निकट होती है।
4. ऐसी स्थिति में पृथ्वी और सूर्य के बीच दूरी 14.70 करोड़ किमी है।
6.अपसौर (Aphelion)
1. पृथ्वी जब सूर्य से अधिकतम दूरी पर होती है तो उसे अपसौर कहते हैं।
2. ऐसी स्थिति 4 जुलाई को होती है।
3. ऐसी स्थिति में पृथ्वी और सूर्य के बीच की दूरी 15.21 करोड़ किमी होती है।
7.एपसाइड रेखा :
उपसौरिक एवं अपसौरिक को मिलाने वाली काल्पनिक रेखा सूर्य के केन्द्र से गुजरती है । इसे एपसाइड रेखा कहते हैं।
7.अक्षांश (Latitude)
1. विषुवत वृत्त से उत्तर या दक्षिण दिशा में स्थित किसी स्थान की कोणीय दूरी को अक्षांश कहते हैं।
2. यह कोण पृथ्वी के केन्द्र पर बनता है। इसे विषुवत वृत्त से दोनों ओर अंशों में मापा जाता है।
3.विषुवत वृत्त 0 अंश के अक्षांश को प्रदर्शित करता है, जो सबसे लंबा (दीर्घतम) अक्षांश है और पृथ्वी की परिधि पर केन्द्रित है।
4.विषुवत वृत्त की उत्तरी एवं दक्षिणी दिशा में 1° के अंतराल से खींचे जाने पर 90-90 अक्षांश वृत्त होते हैं। यानी किसी भी स्थान का अक्षांश 90° से अधिक नहीं हो सकता।
5.विषुवत वृत्त के उत्तरी भाग को उत्तरी गोलार्द्ध और दक्षिणी भाग को दक्षिणी गोलार्द्ध कहते हैं।
8.अक्षांश समांतर (Parallels of Latitude):
1.काल्पनिक रेखाओं का एक ऐसा समूह जो पृथ्वी के चारों ओर पूर्व से पश्चिम दिशा में विषुवत रेखा के समानान्तर खींचा जाता है, अक्षांश रेखा कहलाता है।
2.अथवा भूमध्य रेखा से एकसमान कोणीय दूरी वाले स्थानों को मिलाने वाली रेखा को अक्षांश रेखा कहते हैं। भूमध्य रेखा 0° की अक्षांश रेखा है, अतः इस पर स्थित सभी स्थानों का अक्षांश 0° होगा।
3.भूमध्य रेखा के उत्तर में स्थित अक्षांश रेखाओं को उत्तरी अक्षांश रेखाएँ तथा इसके दक्षिण में स्थित अक्षांश रेखाओं को दक्षिणी अक्षांश रेखाएँ कहते हैं।
9.दो अक्षांश रेखाओं के मध्य की दूरी 111 किमी. होती है।
नोट: यदि अक्षांश समांतरों को 1” के अंतराल पर खींचते हैं, तो उत्तरी एवं दक्षिणी दोनों गोलाद्धों में 80 अक्षांश समांतर होंगे।
10.इस प्रकार विषुवत वृत्त को लेकर अक्षांश समांतरों की कुल संख्या 179 होगी।
11.भूमध्य रेखा के उत्तर में 23 ½° अक्षांश को कर्क रेखा कहते हैं।
12.दक्षिण में 23 ½° मकर रेखा कहते हैं।
13.भूमध्य रेखा के उत्तर में को आर्कटिक वृत्त और दक्षिण में 66 ½° (661/2°30’) अक्षांश को अंटार्कटिक वृत्त कहते हैं।

दक्षिण अफ्रीका,
मोजाम्बिक मेडागास्कर,
ऑस्ट्रेलिया एवं
भारत के कुछ हिस्से होकर गुजरते हैं।
15. विषुवत रेखा निम्न देशों से होकर गुजरती है: इक्वाडोर, कोलंबिया,ब्राजील, गैबॉन, कांगो गणराज्य, लोकतांत्रिक कांगो गणराज्य, युगांडा, केन्या, सोमालिया, मालदीव, इंडोनेशिया किरिबाती एवं साओं तोमे और प्रिंसेपे।
16.देशान्तर (Longitude)
1.ग्रीनविच रेखा से किसी स्थान की कोणात्मक दूरी को उस स्थान का देशान्तर कहते हैं अथवा उत्तरी तथा दक्षिणी ध्रुव को मिलाने वाली काल्पनिक रेखा को देशान्तर रेखा कहते हैं।
2.देशांतर रेखाओं की लम्बाई बराबर होती है।
3.ये रेखाएँ समानान्तर नहीं होती हैं। ये रेखाएँ उत्तरी तथा दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर एक बिन्दु पर मिल जाती है।
4.ध्रुवों से विषुवत् रेखा की ओर बढ़ने पर देशान्तरों के बीच की दूरी बढ़ती जाती है तथा विषुवत् रेखा पर इसके बीच की दूरी अधिकतम (111.32 किमी) होती है।
5.देशांतर रेखाओं को एक समान होने के कारण इसकी गणना में कठिनाई थी। इसीलिए सभी देशों ने सर्वसम्मति से यह निश्चित किया कि ग्रीनविच वेधशाला से गुजरने वाली देशांतर रेखा से गणना शुरू की जानी चाहिए। अतः इसे हम प्रधान मध्याह्न रेखा कहते हैं।
6.इस देशांतर का मान 0° है। इससे हम 180° पूर्व तथा 180° पश्चिम देशांतर की गणना करते हैं।
7.प्रधान मध्याह्न रेखा की बायीं ओर की रेखाएँ पश्चिमी देशान्तर और दाहिनी ओर की रेखाएँ पूर्वी देशान्तर कहलाती हैं।
8.ये क्रमशः पश्चिमी गोलार्द्ध एवं पूर्वी गोलार्द्ध कहलाते हैं। 180° पूर्व तथा 180° पश्चिम देशांतर एक ही रेखा है।
9.गोलाकार होने के कारण पृथ्वी 24 घंटे में 360° घूम जाती है, अतः 1° देशान्तर की दूरी तय करने में पृथ्वी को 4 मिनट का समय लगता है।
17.देशान्तर के आधार पर ही किसी स्थान का समय ज्ञात किया जाता है। दो देशान्तर रेखाओं के बीच की दूरी गोरे (Gore) नाम से जानी जाती है।
शून्य अंश अक्षांश एवं शून्य अंश देशान्तर अटलांटिक महासागर में काटती है।
नोटः मानचित्र एवं
ग्लोब पर जाने वाली प्रतिच्छेद रेखाओं को भौगोलिक रेखाजाल कहते हैं।
18. संक्रांति (Solstice): सूर्य के उत्तरायण और दक्षिणायन की सीमा को संक्रांति कहते हैं।
19. कर्क संक्रांति (Cancer Solstice ) : 21 जून को सूर्य कर्क रेखा पर लम्बवत् होता है, इसे कर्क संक्रांति या ग्रीष्म अयनांत कहते हैं। इस दिन उत्तरी गोलार्द्ध में सबसे बड़ा दिन होता है।
नोट : नॉर्वे में अर्द्धरात्रि के समय सूर्य 21 जून को दिखाई पड़ता है।
20. मकर संक्रांति (Capricorn Solstice): 22
1. दिसम्बर को सूर्य मकर रेखा पर लम्बवत् होता है।
2.इस मकर संक्रांति या कहते हैं। इस दिन दक्षिणी गोलार्द्ध में सबसे बड़ा दिन होता है।
21.विषुव (Equinox) : यह पृथ्वी का वह स्थिति है, जब सूर्य की किरणें विषुवत रेखा पर लम्बवत् पड़ती हैं और सर्वत्र दिन एवं रात बराबर होते हैं।
22.23 सितम्बर एवं 21 मार्च को सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर दिन एवं रात बराबर होते हैं। इसे क्रमशः शरद विषुव (Autumnal Equinox) एवं वसंत विषुव (Vernal Equinox) कहते हैं।
23.21 मार्च से 23 सितम्बर की अवधि में उत्तरी गोलार्द्ध सूर्य का प्रकाश 12 घंटे या अधिक समय तक प्राप्त करता है।
अतः यहाँ दिन बड़े एवं रातें छोटी होती हैं। जैसे-जैसे उत्तरी ध्रुव की ओर बढ़ते जाते हैं, दिन की अवधि भी 62 जाती है।
24.उत्तरी ध्रुव पर तो दिन की अवधि छह महीने की होती है।
25. 23 सितम्बर से 21 मार्च तक सूर्य का प्रकाश दक्षिणी गोलार्द्ध में 12 घंटे या अधिक समय तक प्राप्त होता है, जैसे-जैसे दक्षिणी ध्रुव की ओर बढ़ते हैं दिन की अवधि भी बढ़ती है।
26.दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर इसी कारण छह महीने तक दिन रहता है।
27.इस प्रकार उत्तरी ध्रुव एवं दक्षिणी ध्रुव दोनों पर ही छह महीने तक दिन व छह महीने तक रात्रि रहती है।
नोट ः पृथ्वी को अपनी अक्ष पर झुकी होने के कारण दिन एवं रात छोटा-बड़ा होता है।
